Quantum Boca Tackle Can Handle the Monsters

For tackling powerful tarpon that can mangle equipment, experts turn to the best gear available – Quantum!

Capt. Robert Moore grew up fishing the waters of Charlotte Harbor near Punta Gorda, Fla. Charlotte Harbor connects to the Gulf of Mexico through Boca Grande Pass, one of the best places in the world to catch giant silver kings. Since these mighty fish may weigh more than 200 pounds, the captain turns to the namesake equipment, a Quantum Boca Performance Tuned 80 spinning reel mated to a 7-foot Boca PT Offshore Powerlite rod.

“The rod has a fast taper and is strong enough to handle a big tarpon, but light enough to cast small baits that we sometimes need to catch tarpon,” Moore explained. “It has the sensitivity of a smaller rod, but the backbone of a larger one. I put 40-pound braided line on the reel. With this rod and reel combination, it’s light enough to feel a good fight from smaller tarpon and beefy enough to handle the really big ones.”

The one-piece Boca PT Offshore Powerlite rod, model number BCOS7040, can handle 25- to 40-pound line. It features quality Fuji components matched to a high-modulus, multi-layered graphite blank with a choice of handle configurations.

“The rod has enough play in it that we can cast smaller baits, but still handle a really big fish,” Moore said. “Tarpon have a very bony mouth. Sometimes, it’s hard to get a hook to stick. We really have to drive the hook into it. This rod gives us the backbone to do that. I’ve caught tarpon weighing more than 150 pounds with that rod.”

With a 4.9:1 gear ratio and seven bearings, the Boca PT 80 spinning reel, model number BSP80PTS, can smoothly hold 330 yards of 20-pound line. Made of high-quality solid one-piece aluminum construction, the reel weighs 30.5 ounces. With its MAGLOK system, it can handle 42 pounds of drag. The Quantum Saltguard six-layer corrosion protection finish keeps it in good shape, even after tough fishing conditions.

“My number one reason for picking Quantum is because I fish hard in a harsh environment,” Moore said. “I got tired of other reels not being able to last. The Quantum multi-layer corrosion protection can hold up to the saltwater environment. My Quantum gear lasts much longer. The bearings and drag system are as smooth as can be. It’s a well-built reel, one of the best reels that I’ve ever used.”
